CAMBODIA HEALTHCARE IMPROVEMENT EFFORT

The Asia Area Latter-Day Saint Charities through the Cambodia Association of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints have initiated the Cambodian Healthcare Improvement Effort (CHIE), in cooperation with national and local Cambodian government officials and ARISE International to increase self-reliance and capacity within the Cambodian medical system. This is a humanitarian service project with emphasis on healthcare education for rural Cambodian healthcare providers.

This effort is not intended to provide direct healthcare, to proselyte, to teach Church doctrine, or to address any political agenda. Relationship building and cultural exchange is encouraged, but the aim is to serve Cambodian’s rather than educational, cultural or travel opportunities for participants from the US or other resource rich nations.

DETAILS:

THE CHIE TEAM AND EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS

In the US, accepted CHIE volunteers will participate in ARISE pre-trip volunteer meetings to learn about the education to be offered and to better understand the culture.

In Cambodia, the CHIE volunteer team will be made up of an ARISE trip leader, accepted volunteers, and members of the Cambodian Association of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The CHIE team will present a variety of healthcare education sessions to healthcare providers in rural hospitals and clinics.

Education plans and teaching materials are developed in cooperation with the Cambodian government to address national needs. Education must align with the World Health Organization standards. If a new education topic needs development volunteers may help. All materials will be prepared, approved, and translated prior to CHIE team arrival in Cambodia.

EXPENSES AND TRAVEL INFORMATION

This effort is entirely funded by donations and administrated by volunteers. In this spirit, volunteers are asked to provide funding for themselves and to make donation of equipment or supplies (if appropriate) when possible.

Dates for each education project will be identified by the Cambodian Association of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Accepted CHIE volunteers will pay application fees and travel expenses to ARISE. Travel arrangements will be made by ARISE for US volunteers.

EQUIPMENT AND DONATIONS

Participants may help deliver and educate on the use of equipment as outlined in the education plans. Approved equipment specifically needed by healthcare facilities for training will be purchased and donated by Asia Area Latter-Day Saint Charities or other interested donors. Purchases will be made so delivery will occur before the arrival of CHIE volunteers in Cambodia.

Monetary or medical equipment donations for this project can be received by ARISE International, a 501(c)3 public funded charity. Tax receipts may be provided for donations. Outdated or experimental supplies or materials cannot be donated.

EVALUATION AND RESEARCH

Volunteers will be asked to complete pre and post surveys to help evaluate educational sessions and the overall CHIE process.

Research projects analyzing impact and sustainability will be conducted through the life of the project. Volunteer involvement in research will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

APPLICATION, ITINERARIES, AND COST

Applications are currently being accepted from licensed healthcare professionals wanting to participate in this project. Acceptance for applicants will be determined as quickly as possible.

One adult family member (over the age of 18) who does not have a healthcare professions license may accompany a volunteer if desired. Family members will be required to stay with the group and abide by the same participant agreement.

Participants may choose a service only travel option or a service and extended travel option. The service and extended travel option allows participants to stay in the country longer than actual service options. Sample itineraries and pricing are in the application.
